Mantell
Mantell, Gideon Algeenon (1790-1852), the Sussex geologist, was born at Lewes. He practised as a surgeon at Lewes, Brighton, and Clapham, devoting his leisure to scientific work. He was awarded medals by the Geological and Royal Societies for his discovery and description of the Dinosaurian reptiles, iguanodon, hylasosaurus, Pelorosaurus, and Regnosaurus, and was the author of Fossils of the South Bowns and Wonders of Geology (1833), a highly popular work. He was also an able lecturer.
