Maitland Sir Richard
Maitland, Sir Richard (149G-1586),- lawyer and poet, was the son of a Maitland who fell at Flodden. Educated at St. Andrews and in France he became in 1552 a border-commissioner, and soon after a Lord of the Session, and from 1562 to 1567 he was Lord Privy Seal. He remained on the bench till the age of 88. Besides poems, chiefly satirical, he wrote a History of the House of Seyton.
