Littr
Littre, Maximilien Paul Emile (1801-81), a French lexicographer and philologist, was born at Paris. He was connected with the National and other journals, wrote a summary of Comte's philosophy and part of a Literary History of France. He was elected to the Academy in 1871, the date of the last volume of his magnificent Bictionnaire de la Langue Franeaise, in which the plan of tracing the history of each word was first systematically and extensively carried out.
