Latakia

Latakia, a port in Syria, 75 miles N. of Tripoli, on the site of the ancient Laodicea ad Mare. It has remains of Roman buildings, and was a wealthy city until far into the Middle Ages. The wellknown Latakia tobacco is grown on the hills in the neighbourhood.
