Kingston (Surrey) - upon - Thames, a municipal borough and market-town of Surrey, on the right bank of the Thames, 5 miles S. of Richmond, and 12 miles S.W. of London by railway. The residents are for the most part London business men. A bridge or ford existed here at a very early date, and many Roman antiquities have been found io the neighbourhood. The King's Stone, a rude block on which seven of the Saxon kings are said to have been crowned, now stands in an open space in front of the Court House. Kingston received its first charter from King John.
