Kel Gueres
Kel-Gueres, a chief branch of the Air (Asben) Tuaregs, Central Sahara, who, with the kindred Itisan, form a confederacy distinct from and hostile to the Kel-Owi. They reached this region from the north early in the 18th century; but about the year 1835 were driven by the Kel-Owi farther south and west in the direction of the Awelimmiden Confederacy. The Kel-Gueres are full-blood Tuaregs, and very warlike, fighting on horses and camels, armed with lance, sword, dagger, and an enormous shield of ox or antelope hide. The confederacy numbers about 25,000 souls, and can muster about 5,000 mounted warriors.
