Keith Hon George
Keith, Hon. George Keith Elphinstonb, first Viscount, was born in 1747, and posted in 1775. He was promoted to flag-rank in 179-1, and took part in the Glorious First of June victory, when he lost a leg. In the following year, with a squadron, he reduced the Cape of Good Hope. In 1796 the Dutch attempted to retake it, but their expedition, after some parley, surrendered to Sir George. In consequence of this be was in 1797 created Baron Keith in the peerage of Ireland, and was soon afterwards given a post in the Channel Fleet. In 1799 he was promoted to be vice-admiral and commanderin-chief in the Mediterranean. He died in 1823.
