Johnof Salisbury
John of Salisbury was born at Salisbury a little before 1120, and was of Saxon race. He went early to France and became a pupil first of Abelard and then of the founders of the School of Chartres. Returning to England he was for thirteen years secretary to Theobald, Archbishop of Canterbury, and frequently went on missions to Rome. Thomas a Becket retained his services, and he followed his master abroad, and was present at his assassination. He then retired to France, was made Bishop of Chartres, and died about 1180. His Life of St. Thomas and Life of St. Anselm are: of considerable historical importance, whilst his other works entitled Policraticus and Metalogicus throw great light on the state of education and the currents of thought during the reign of scholasticism.
