John VI
John VI., the last king of that name in Portugal, "was acting as regent for his insane mother, Maria I., when the French invasion drove him from Lisbon in 1807. He established himself at Rio de Janeiro as' Emperor of Brazil, and allied himself with Fngland and the other powers against Napoleon. In 1816 he succeeded to the throne, but did not Teturn to Portugal until 1821, when be had to suppress the insurrection of his son, Dom Miguel. He died in 1826.
