Jocelin

Jocelin de Brakelonde, the compiler of the well-known chronicle that bears his name, was a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds, acting as chaplain to Abbot Sampson.

His record of the affairs of the community extends from 1173 to 1202, and is a curious example of the naf and simple spirit of his age. It suggested to Carlyle the idea, upon which he founded the essay entitled Past and Present. Jocelin died about 1211.
