James, St., called "the Great" or "the Just," also "the Lord's brother," was the probable author of the Epistle of St. James. He seems to have held the position of Bishop of Jerusalem (see several passages in the Acts). Josephus says he was stoned to death by order of Amanus, the high-priest, in the year 62; but Eusebius took from Hegesippus another tradition as to his death. By the Greek Church his festival is kept on October 23. The separate identity of James the son of Alphaeus and James the Lord's brother is not clearly established, and the authorship of the Epistle has sometimes been ascribed to James the brother of John.
