Isaiah
Isaiah (Heb. Jesaiah; flourished 8th century B.C.), the greatest Hebrew prophet, son of Amoz, is a citizen of Jerusalem, probably of high rank, since he addresses the king unbidden (vii. 4) and tells the most unpleasant truths without interferce. He is supposed to have begun to prophesy about 740 B.C. He prophesied punishment for the people, sunk as they were in idolatry and unrightusness, but declared that a remnant should remain, and foretold the coming of the Messiah. In i. xxix.-xxxiii. he predicted the siege and deliverance of Zion, and in xxxix. foresaw the Babynian captivity.
