Hiccough
Hiccough is produced by involuntary contraction of the diaphragm accompanieel by spasm of the glottis. A series of contractions usually occur at short intervals each accompanied by a characteristic sound, due to the closure of the glottis, and after the lapse of a few minutes the attack of hiccough comes to an end; if it is more persistent it may usually be checked by repeating the act of swallowing several times in succession, or even by holding the breath in some cases. In some forms of disease obstinate hiccough occurs; this condition is fortunately :' rare one, as it is most distressing and but little can be done to relieve it.
