Hecker
Hecker, Friederich Karl Franz (1811-81), a German revolutionary leader, was born in Baden, and for several years practised as an advocate at Mannheim. Some years previously to the revolution of 1848 he plunged into politics and became a Socialist chief. Having failed to attain his ends by constitutional measures, he headed a body of men who invaded Baden, and were defeated at Kandern. He now fled from the Fatherland, and passed the rest of his life in the United States.
Here he took part in the Civil War, and died at St. Louis.
