Hartlepool
Hartlepool, a seaport in the county of Durham, 18 miles E.S.E. of the city of Durham. It passed from the Bruces when they became the royal family of Scotland, and was then granted to the Clifford family. From the earliest times it has been engaged in the fishing trade, and the manufacture of cement and iron ship-building are also carried on. The shipping trade has been transferred to West Hartlepool, the modern part of the town, which stands on the south of Hartlepool Bay. West Hartlepool, founded in 1847, has a fine harbour, with large docks, shipbuilding yards, and marine engine-building establishments. Coal, in large quantities, flax, grain, and timber are the chief imports; while woollen and cotton goods, cement, machinery, and other products are carried hence to St. Petersburg and the chief Baltic ports. West Hartlepool was incorporated in 1887. The Hartlepools unite in returning a member to Parliament.
