Hardouin
Hardouin, Jean (1646-1729), a learned Jesuit, notorious for his peculiar views regarding the ancient classics. He was born at Quimper in Brittany, and became librarian of the college of Lonis le Grand at Paris in 1683. Hardouin held that almost all the writings attributed to classical authors were fabricated by monks in the 13th century, and that the works of art supposed to be ancient are likewise forgeries. He broached a similar theory with regard to Dante's works. He published a valuable edition of Pliny.
