Grove

Grove, Sir George, was born at Clapham in 1820. He was trained as an engineer, and took part with Robert Stephenson in building the Britannia Bridge, and also built some iron lighthouses in the West Indies. He afterwards became secretary to the Society of Arts, and, later, to the Crystal Palace Company. He also edited Macmillan's Magazine, edited and partly wrote a Dictionary of Music and Musicians, and in 1883 was knighted and appointed Director of the Royal College of Music, being succeeeled by Dr. Parry in 1894. He has also directed his attention to the East and Bible history, aiding Dean Stanley in his researches, and contributing to the Dictionary of the Bible.
