Grouchy
Grouchy, Emmanuel. Marquis de (1766-1847), a French general who, entering the army at fourteen, took part in the Vendean campaign,"and was appointed second in command to Hoche in the Irish expedition. He saw much service in Italy, and fought in most of the battles of the German campaign, one of his chief feats being the covering of the retreat at the battle of Leipzig. He joined Napoleon after the latter's escape from Elba, and defeated Bleicher at Ligny. After Waterloo - which some of his enemies declared to have been lost through his mistake - he conducted the army back to Paris, and then went to America till 1819. In 1831 he returned to France, and was reinstated in his military rank.
