Grenada

Grenada, one of the British West Indian islands, belongs to the Windward Isles, and is 60 miles from the South American coast, and about the same distance to the north of Trinidad. It is 24 miles long and 12 miles broad. It was discovered by Columbus in 1498, but not settled till the French came to it from Martinique in the middle of the 17th century. It was taken by the British in 1762, but did not finally come into their hands till the peace at the close of the American War (1783). The soil of the island is very fertile; fruits, nutmeg9, and cocoa are the chief productions, and turtles abound on the coast. Ranges of mountains run across, and there are two inland lakes. Grenada is a Crown colony, and has a lieutenant-governor and a council nominated by the Crown. The capital is Georgetown on the south-western coast.
