Greely

Greely, Adolphus Washington (b. 1844), American Arctic explorer, was born at Newburyport in Massachusetts. In 1881 he was appointed head of the American expedition to the north of Smith Sound, undertaken in accordance with the international scheme decided on at Hamburg in 1879. After undergoing terrible privations, the survivors were in 1884 rescued off Cape Sabine by Captain Schley. In 1886 Greely published a narrative of the expedition, entitled Three Years oj Arctic Service. In 1887 he became chief of the signal service.
