Gradual

Gradual, an antiphon or sentence, usually taken from the Psalms, which is sung to "plain chaunt" melodies after the epistle in the Communion service. It was so called because sung whilst the priest was ascending the steps (Latin gracilis) of the ambo (q.v.) to read the Gospel. The word also denotes a service-book containing plain chaunt melodies.
