Gordon Alexander

Gordon, Alexander, the author of the Itineravium Septentrionale and immortalised as "Sandy Gordon" in Scott's Antiquary, was probably born and educated at Aberdeen about 1700. Little is known of his early life, but he seems to have travelled as a tutor, and in 1726 he reappeared in Scotland and published his great work. He held successively the secretaryship of the Society for the Encouragement of Learning, the Society of Antiquaries, and the Egyptian Club. In 1741 he settled in South Carolina, and became registrar of the province. The date of his death is uncertain; but his will was made in 1754.
