Girtin
Girtin, Thomas (1775-1802), a painter of landscapes in water-colours, was born in Southwark, andearlymade the acquaintance of J. M.W. Turner.
He began to exhibit at the Academy in 1794, his first subjects being architectural. Mr. Ruskin considers that Turner owed much to him. Most of his drawings are in private hands, but there are examples of his art both in Bloomsbury and at South Kensington. His panorama of London was being exhibited at the time of his death, which took place soon after his return from Paris, where he drew and etched some fine sketches.
