Giles
Giles, St., who has given his name to so many churches, is thought to have lived in the 7th century A.D. He was an Athenian of good birth, who gave away all his possessions, and lived first at Aries and afterwards in the desert country in its neighbourhood. Here he is said to have lived in a cave upon the milk of a hind, and to have been traced through her by the King of France, who made him abbot of a monastery. The festival of St. Giles, patron of lepers, beggars, and cripples, is on September 1. He is often known by his Latin name, AEgidius.
