Giffen
Giffen, Sir Robert (b. 1837), an able statistician, was born in Lanarkshire, and was in his early years engaged in commerce at Glasgow. Having had some slight journalistic experience in Scotland, he came to London in 1862. He became assistant editor of the Economist and the Fortnightly Review, and was for some years city editor of the Daily News. In 1876 he became head of the Statistical Department of the Board of Trade, and held that post till 1881. He has published Essays in Finance (1879, 1886), and Stock Exchanye Securities (1878).
