Giessen
Giessen, a town in Hesse-Darmstadt, 33 miles N.N.W. of Frankfort, with a population of 13,858, situated at the point where the Lahn joins the Wieseck. It was formerly fortified, but is now notable for the school of chemistry, which owes its reputation to Liebig (q.v.), and is the chief feature of its university.
