Gessner
Gessner, Salomon (1730-1788), a Swiss poet and painter, was born at Zurich, where he spent his life- as a bookseller. His first work to attract notice vias-Lied vines Sehweizers an sein Bcwaffnetes. M'ddclicn. Then followed Baphnis, Idyllen, and Der Tod Abels, which was translated into English, and was often to be met with about the middle of the present century. His writings, like his paintings, belonged to the sentimental school of shepherds and shepherdesses and the like.
