Furness
Furness, a manorial liberty comprising the promontory between the mouth of the Duddon and Morcambe Bay, in N.W. Lancashire. It was granted by King Stephen to the monks of Furness Abbey, the ruins of which, dating from 1128, still exist close to Dalton station. The district, though agriculturally poor, has great mineral resources, which have been very successfully developed by the present proprietors, the Dukes of Devonshire and Buccleuch.
