Esquirol
Esquirol, Jean-Etienne (1772-1840), a French physician, who made the insane his special study. He was born at Toulouse, and studied at Paris, and was appointed sanitary officer to the Army of the Pyrenees. He visited the lunatic asylums of France, and in 1811 was appointed physician to the Salpetriere, and in 1823 was made inspector-general of the medical faculty. He wrote much upon madness, mental disease, and lunatic asylums.
