Epistaxis
Epistaxis (from the Greek, to drop or let fall), bleeding from the nose. Epistaxis may occur as the resielt of injury, and is caused in rare instances by growths affecting the back of the nose or pharynx. It not uncommonly occurs spontaneously, particularly in young adults and in persons of middle age. The treatment of epistaxis consists in enforcing absolute rest and applying cold. Elevation of the arms is a useful expedient in mild cases. In some instances, when the flow is excessive, much more extreme measures must be adopted, such as plugging the nares. For the performance, of this operation, however, skilled assistance would have to be obtained.
