Electromotive Force

Electromotive Force (e.m.f.) means the difference of condition that exists between two regions connected by a conductor, whereby a continuous neutralisation of electrification of opposite kinds is set up. The difference is one of potential between the two regions, and is so measured. The term is ill-advised, but too general to be readily replaced by a better. [Electricity.]
