Ehrenbreitstein

Ehrenbreitstein ("the Broad Stone of Honour"), a Prussian fortress on a height upon the right bank of the Rhine opposite Coblentz, with which it communicates by a bridge of boats and an iron railway bridge. The French blew up the fortress in 1801, and had to pay for its rebuilding in 1816. The fortress will contain a garrison of 14,000, and a year's stores for an army of 60,000, and there is a well communicating with the Rhine. On three sides the fortress is inaccessible.
