Dynamometer
Dynamometer, in Engineering, is an instrument for measuring the power given out by ud engine of any kind. Such instruments are of two kinds, absorption dynamometers and transmission dynamometers. The former absorb all the power they are meant to measure, and must therefore be regarded as exceedingly wasteful, for the whole power of the engine is spent in the instrument, generally in overcoming frictional resistance. The latter absorb none and simply transmit the whole. They may therefore be employed when the engine is doing its ordinary work.
