Du Cange Charles Dupresne
Du Cange, Charles Dupresne, Sieur (1610-1688), a French historian and linguist, born near Amiens. He was educated at the Jesuits' College in Amiens, and then at Orleans and Paris. In 1631 he became a parliamentary advocate at Paris, and in 1645 royal treasurer at Amiens. In 1668 he came to Paris and devoted himself to literature. Among his works are Glossaries of Greek and Latin of the Middle Ayes and Modern Times, Historia Byzantina, Annals of Zonaras, Numismatics of the Middle Ages. He has been called the French Varro, and was esteemed as much for his modesty and self-denial as for his high character and pure morals.
