Donatus
Donatus, AElius (4th century), a grammarian and rhetorician of Rome, who was the teacher of St. Jerome. He wrote several treatises upon the several parts of grammar, and these were so widely used that "Donat" became a word synonymous with grammar, and is so employed in a French proverb, and in the title of a book written by an English bishop. For his works as issued in the early days of printing letters cut on wooden blocks were first used. Donatus also wrote a commentary upon Terence.
