Dominicans
Dominicans (Fratres Prmdicatores, or Preaching Brethren), an order of monks established by St. Dominic, and confirmed by the Pope in 1216. From their original black dress they were known in England as the Black Friars. In 1276 the Corporation of London granted the Dominicans two streets near the Thames in the district still bearing their name. Their vows enjoin absolute poverty.
