Demidoff Nicolas Nikitich
Demidoff, Nicolas Nikitich, the grandson of the foregoing, was born at St. Petersburg in 1774. He devoted himself to the scientific management of his vast mineral property, and to the improvement of the condition of his workmen and tenants. In his later years he settled down at Florence, where he surrounded himself with literary and artistic friends, and died in 1828. His two sons, Paul and Anatole, were well known personages in Paris during the Second Empire. The latter married Princess Mathilde, daughter of Prince Jerome, but was separated from her and died in 1870.
