Curwen
Curwen, John (1816-1880), an English musician, born at Heckmondwike in Yorkshire. His father was an independent minister, and the son was appointed to a pastorate at Plaistow. In 1841 he inaugurated the Tonic Sol-Fa system in music. In 1843 he published a Grammar of Vocal Music, and in 1864 gave himself up entirely to the advancement of his musical views.
