Clairvaux

Clairvaux (Clara Vallis), a commune in the department of Aube, and on the river Aube. Here was built in 1115 a famous Cistercian monastery. one of the so-called filles de Citeaux, or daughters of the mother establishment in Burgundy. St. Bernard was the first abbot. The ruined buildings have been of late years converted into a prison or reformatory.
