Cent

Cent, in the United States and Canada, the 100th part of a dollar (q.v.), about equal in value to 1/2d. sterling. The Dutch florin, value about Is. 8d., is also divided into 100 cents. The centime of France, and the centesimo of Italy, are each the 100th part of a franc. The word cent, is also used as an abbreviation of the Latin centum, 100, as in the phrase "the Three per Cents."
