Cavendishor Candish Thomas
Cavendish (or Candish), Thomas, one of the greatest of the Elizabethan navigators, was born in Suffolk about 1555; and in 1586 left England in command of an expedition which met with great success against the Spaniards, and which, having circumnavigated the globe, returned in 1588. Cavendish had previously served under Sir Richard Grenville against the Spaniards in the West Indies. In 1591 he sailed on a second voyage round the world, with the Leicester, Roebuck, Desire, Dainty, and Black Pinnace. He met with continuous disaster, lost all his ships save one by wreck or desertion, and died at sea, probably early in 1593.
