Cameo
Cameo, a precious stone, generally onyx, agate, or sardonyx, carved in relief, as opposed to an intaglio, which was hollowed out. Cameos were largely made by the ancients, and the stone used was generally composed of two or more different coloured layers, and the skill of the artist was employed in exposing the various colours. Shells as well as stones are used for cameos.
