Buchner
Buchner, Ludwig, German physician and materialist, was born at Darmstadt, 1824, and after studying at different universities, became a lecturer at the University of Tubingen. In consequence of his publication of a work entitled Kraft and Stoff, in which he set forth a materialistic theory of the universe, he lost his university post and betook himself to the practice of medicine. Among the rest of his works are, Natur and Geist, Aus Natur and Wissenschaft, a translation of Lyell's Antiquity of Man, and treatises on Darwinism, the idea of God, and intelligence in animals.
