Brendan
Brendan, or Brenaum, St., of Clonfert, was born in 484 at Tralee, co. Kerry. After completing his studies he was ordained by Bishop Ere and then became possessed of a desire to go in search of "the mysterious land far from human ken." After years of unsuccessful wandering he returned home, only, however, to set out again. In 553 he founded a monastery at Clonfert and afterwards visited St. Columba at Hy. The Navigation of St. Brendan was a popular book in France, Spain and Holland in the 11th century. St. Brendan's death occurred in 577. His day in the calendar is May 16.
