Brand John
Brand, John, antiquary, was born in 1744 at Durham. After graduating at Oxford, whither friends had sent him, he was in 1777 elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and in 1784 presented to the rectory of the united parishes of St. Mary-at-Hill and St. Mary Hubbard in the City of London. In the same year he was elected resident secretary to the Society of Antiquaries, an office that he held till his death, 1800. His Observations on Popular Antiquities is regarded as the leading book on this subject in the English language.
