Belon

Belon, Pierre, naturalist, was born in 1518 at Soulletiere in Maine. After studying medicine he travelled in Germany, Greece, Egypt, Asia Minor, and Arabia, publishing the results in 1553. He wrote treatises also on different departments of animal and vegetable life, the chief being a Natural History of Birds, 1555. He was murdered by robbers in 1564 while gathering specimens in the Bois de Boulogne.
