Bathybius
Bathybius. When alcohol is added to seawater the sulphate of lime in the latter is deposited as a gelatinous mass or precipitate; some of this, containing minute organic calcareous bodies (coccospheres, etc.), when first found was described as an organism. It was supposed to cover great areas of the deep ocean floors with masses of protoplasmic slime.
