Barton Benjamin Smith
Barton, Benjamin Smith, born in Pennsylvania in 1766, and educated for the medical profession at Edinburgh and Gottingen, settled down to practise in Philadelphia. He subsequently held professorships of materia medica and clinical medicine in the college there, and was elected president of the American Philosophical Society. His numerous books and lectures gave a great impulse to the study of natural history in America. He died in 1815.
