Armitage

Armitage, Edward, R.A., an English painter of frescoes and historical subjects, born in 1817. He was a pupil of Paul Delaroche. In 1842 he exhibited in the Salon his first picture - Prometheus Bound. In 1843-45-47 he took prizes for cartoons at Westminster Hall. After a sojourn in Rome he went to the seat of war in the Crimea and produced The Heavy Cavalry Charge at Balaklava, and The Stand of the Guards at Inkiermann. In 1867 he was elected A.R.A.. and in 1872 R.A. He was appointed professor and lecturer on painting to the Royal Academy in 1875. He died in 1896.
