Apostate

Historical reference: Do not rely on this information. It is very old. About this collection

Apostate (Greek, one who stands away from), one who abandons the religion he has formerly professed; frequently used of those who abandoned Christianity from unworthy motives, such as fear of persecution or desire of gain. The Emperor Julian, however, to whom the epithet was applied, abjured Christianity from purely conscientious motives.
